Former AEW Star Teases Surprise WWE Return

With the number one contender to the WWE NXT Championship being decided in a 25-man battle royal, former AEW star Matt Hardy has teased an appearance.

Cody Rhodes announced the match on last night’s NXT, noting that it would involve wrestlers “from different locker rooms“, leading to much speculation it could involve talent from outside of WWE.

After Knockouts World Champion Jordynne Grace had her second WWE singles match at NXT Battleground, facing NXT Women’s Champion Roxanne Perez, it seems highly likely that the TNA/WWE partnership will continue.

Matt Hardy, formerly of WWE and AEW, has thrown out a tease suggesting he could be in the No. 1 Contenders Battle Royal on next week’s NXT.

Hardy made the proclamation on Twitter ahead of his TNA Championship match on June 14, tweeting:

“After I PROCURE the TNA Title of the World on Friday, I might just DELETE 24 OBNOXIOUS ANTS & also become the NXT Champion.”

Matt Hardy last competed for WWE in January 2020 and was engaged in a feud with Randy Orton going into February of that year.

In March 2020, Hardy revealed that he had departed WWE, appearing in AEW on the March 18 episode of Dynamite.

He would remain with AEW until his contract expired in April 2024, returning to TNA Wrestling at Rebellion on April 20.

Hardy recently stated that he is still a ‘free agent’ as he hasn’t signed a long-term contract with TNA Wrestling.
